The Justice Department released a statement from Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on the arrests of Sinaloa Cartel leaders Ismael Zambada Garcia (El Mayo) and Joaquin Guzman Lopez:

"The Justice Department has arrested two more leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, a violent and powerful drug trafficking group. We arrested

Ismael Zambada Garcia, or 'El Mayo,' cofounder of the Cartel, and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of the other cofounder, today in El Paso, Texas.

Both men face multiple charges in the U.S. for leading the Cartel’s criminal activities, including fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking.

El Mayo and Guzman Lopez join other Sinaloa Cartel leaders the Justice Department has arrested. This includes the other cofounder, Joaquin Guzman

Loera (El Chapo); another son of El Chapo, Ovidio Guzman Lopez; and the Cartel’s lead hitman, Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas (El Nini).

Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our country has faced. The Justice Department will continue to hold every cartel leader, member, and associate accountable for poisoning our communities."
