President Joe Biden Ends Re-Election Campaign to Defend Democracy
President Joe Biden announced the end of his re-election campaign, saying it was to protect democracy. He stated, “I love my country more than this office. Defending democracy matters more than any title.”
Biden explained that working for the American people brings him joy, but perfecting the union is about the citizens and their futures, not himself.
It’s unusual for a president to step down voluntarily. Biden decided to do so after pressure from his party, saying it was for the nation's benefit. He urged Americans to join him in preserving democracy.
Biden and Democrats argue that former President Trump, who didn't concede after losing the 2020 election and whose supporters attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021, is a threat to democracy.
Biden emphasized, “America must choose between moving forward or backward, between hope and hate, unity and division. Our republic is now in your hands.”
His speech came three days after ending his campaign. This marks the start of Biden shaping his legacy after a poor debate performance in June, which led many Democrats to urge him to step aside.
Biden said, “I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That’s the best way to unite our nation.”
At a rally in North Carolina, Trump claimed victory over Biden, calling him "the worst president in the history of our country."
Biden announced his decision to end his campaign on social media and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination. Harris quickly gained support from the party and is expected to win the nomination by early August.
Biden praised Harris, calling her experienced, tough, and capable. By endorsing her, he became the first incumbent to step aside for another candidate since 1968.
Biden’s political career spans decades, from winning a county council seat in 1970 to becoming a long-serving senator and vice president. He won the presidency in 2020, defeating Trump.
Biden’s decision to retire means he will end his career undefeated in general elections. His focus now is on completing his term, pursuing his agenda, and preparing for a new president.
He pledged to lower costs, grow the economy, and defend personal freedoms and civil rights until a new president is inaugurated on January 20.
Biden also warned against a second Trump presidency, emphasizing that in America, “The people rule, not kings and dictators. History is in your hands.”
